The Upper Elementary Programme

An extension of the Lower Elementary program, the Upper Elementary program includes the 4th, 5th and 6th grade learners. At Sprouts Montessori, the Upper Elementary environment is specially curated to fulfil the developmental, psychological and social needs of this age group of children. The trained adult facilitates a social environment for these young learners, to allow them to collaborate and work at their individual pace. The children are encouraged to continue to work with the concrete materials, until they arrive at logical conclusions for abstract working.

Who Is An Upper Elementary Child ?

A child in the Upper Elementary environment, is in the age group of 9-12 years. This child aims at developing his/her intellectual independence by fostering individual and group work with his peers.

The observable characteristics of this child are:

Cosmic Curriculum:

Based on the specific needs of this age group, the curriculum is spiralled on the Cosmic syllabus, which is the core philosophy of this pedagogy. The concepts dealt with in Lower Elementary are further scaffolded with deeper work. The format of the curriculum is designed to make the students think and understand the origin of the world and then relate all its existence to the cosmic revelations.

Areas of study:

Children are guided towards logical discerning, through repeated material work. They move towards abstraction of concepts, as they self-arrive at the mathematical rules.

The children are taken into deeper work of 2-D and 3-D shapes. They understand the construction of the various shapes and their relationship with one another.

Geography and History

Integrated in their study, these subjects open a plethora of concepts and events. Their learning experiences are supported by demonstrations, field trips, timeline studies and projects.

Botany and Zoology

The children move into deeper classification activities to understand the inter-connectedness of the living and the non-living world.

The children get opportunities to apply the rules of the language to different forms of expressions and thought.

Languages: (Tamil / Hindi)

Children pursue one of these languages, as on a deeper level of work. They have the option to choose their second and third language, based on their personal choices.
In addition to the core curriculum, Upper Elementary students are also offered various co-curricular subjects for their holistic development. This allows them to apply and hone their vocational skills and develop creative self-expression.
